Maybe religion suppressed knowledge to ensure we didnt destroy ourselves?

we use all manner of inventive and destructive things for all sorts of reasons from increasing the quality of life to waging war. maybe this was the purpose of religion. to ensure we were just ignorant enough to survive.. let me know what you think.
